More babble in the wake of Waking Life. Show Rest of Post
Reincarnation - So if reincarnation exists, how do you explain exponential growth? Either each soul is reincarnated into multiple lives, or you have old souls reincarnating and new souls being created at the same time. Having been raised at least somewhat according to Japanese customs, the notion of reincarnation is fairly familiar to me. But when I analyze the way it's used in Japanese culture, it's almost used to explain genetic inheretence. For example, my mom thinks my brother's my grandfather reincarnated (even though my grandpa died a few years after my brother was born) because of certain character traits that they share. Nowadays, we would attribute that to genetic inheretence, but before anyone knew anything about genetics, it might have made sense to just blame it all on granpa's soul coming back. Of course, that doesn't explain other forms of reincarnation, where you come back as a separate species of animal or something (although, inter-species reincarnation could explain population growth... not sure why you'd want to though).
Collective memory - In the movie, one of the guys talks about an exeriment where they found that people score better in day-old crossword puzzles than new ones, even if they'd never seen them before. I don't know if it's a real experiment, but in the movie, it's used to support the notion of a "collective memory"; memory shared by all. That's a rather dubious claim, but when you look at a society or culture as a whole, there is a form of "memory" that transcends generations. In recent years, I've learned to at least listen to some of the things my mom has to say, because many of the values and beliefs she holds have been passed down through more generations than I could fathom. Japanese culture is thousands of years old, and to a certian degree, it seems plausible that at least some of this "wisdom" is still valid, even if we don't see immediate value in them. For all we know, modern Western thought might be the crappiest idea ever in the history of mankind, and we're merely in the process of proving that it's not sustainable.
