I needed a graphics program, and I didn't feel like going out and hunting for a PhotoShop crack, so I decided to install GIMP instead. Things were slightly more complicated than my run-in with OpenOffice, mostly because the nicely packaged binary distro isn't free, even for starving students (as such, I don't think they're worthy of a link, or even a mention by name). Fortunately, the good folk over at Fink made my life much easier. The only thing that I had to watch out for was that when you select GIMP in Fink, it automatically selects a couple of XFree86 packages unless you're careful. If you have Apple's X11 you need to install the X11 SDK (there's a link to it in the X11 download page), then you need to deselect the default XFree86 packages, and select system-xfree86. From there, it takes over your computer, and a few minutes later, you have GIMP.
As was the case with OpenOffice, other than the non-Aqua interface, I like it very much. It's very fast, and it has more features than some incompetent nimwitt like myself would ever need. And it's free. You really can't ask for much more than that, could you?
