Tech News

Via Slashdot, a nice summary on RFID over on SecurityFocus. It seems pretty balanced and talks about why RFID makes sense for businesses and corporations, but also why regulations might be needed to protect consumer privacy.

There's an article on ExtremeTech that talks about why the PowerMac G5 could give Apple "renewed credibility" even if it's not exactly the fastest desktop in the world. The author says that "it could well be the case that Apple will be the company which brings 64-bit computing to the mainstream" but "the company needs to achieve this with other software and hardware vendors." He points out the lack of high-end workstation software (3D graphics, CAD) for the Macintosh as a possible choke-point to attain respect in that market.

Wired has an article about backscatter x-ray screeners that may be deployed in airports. These devices, unlike traditional mettal detectors, see through clothes by reflecting x-rays off of your skin, and as such, they are capable of "seeing" non-metalic objects. But if you ask me, it should be a violaiton of labor laws to make a TSA agent watch virtually naked images of grandmas and kids for hours on end (if that's not a government job that'll drive you nuts, I don't know what is).

Finally, Jesse Jordan, one of the 4 students sued by the RIAA, has managed to raise his $12,000 fine through online donations. Kinda goes to show how little sympathy (and public support) the RIAA has among ordinary netizens.
