Chicago!
No, I'm not talking about the movie/musical... I'm talking about University of Chicago. Yes, I got my acceptance letter today!!
See extended post for excited rambling...
UPDATE: I've posted my application essays online as promised. Show Rest of Post
Believe it or not, I first heard about UChicago on Slashdot about half a year ago when there was a story about the ScavHunt. I jumped up and said "dude, I want to go there" (literally, ask Pfister)... a month and a visit to Chicago later, I said "dude, I'd sacrifice my first born to go there" (literally, ask my brother). There was a number of things about Chicago that I really liked, but it was mostly the unique feeling of belonging. Even just cruising their website, I got the unprecedented and undescribable feeling that it might be a place where I'd actually fit in, and even though I've been afraid of saying so until today, it felt like I was meant to go there.
Anyway, for those of you who aren't so sure why UChicago's so great, here's my personal list:
- It was the place of the first "controlled" nuclear fission reaction
- Past students and faculty include over 70 Nobel Laureates
- Of course, there's also the Scavenger Hunt...
- They use IMP for their webmail system (hehe, my goal is to switch them to IlohaMail) and Mozilla as the default browser (both are Open Source)
- They mirror all kinds of Open Source software (e.g. Debian)
- The campus is a short walk from the Museum of Science and Industry which is a huge museum any geek (and non-geek) would appreciate
- Their application is called the "Uncommon Application"
- Their chow hall was rated #2 in the country
- It's a kick ass school (they're consistently ranked up there with Yale and Harvard)
Phew... Okay, that's it for now. I'll be posting my 3 application essays online tonight.
