When you take a job that can be performed equally well by either sexes and give it (or not give it) to a person based solely on their sex, that's sexism. McCain's choice of Sarah Palin as his running mate is sexist, pure and simple. She wasn't chosen because of her qualifications. She wasn't chosen because she has knowledge or experiences that complement McCain's. She was chosen because she's a woman.

While I think Sarah Palin was a *terrible* choice (she's a bit too much of a religious homophobic fascist for my taste), you could make the argument in this case that gender actually is a substantive issue.
Her "job" is first to get McCain elected, and second to help run the country if and only if he gets elected. If having an XX on the ballot makes him more likely to be elected by irrationally gender-focused electorate, then that's a job that requires a vagina.
