So tomorrow's the big day, and the way I see it, a big test for our society. Sure, which candidate "wins" (i.e. ends up in office, not necessarily by winning the election) probably will have a grave impact on the future of our country, and the whole world. However, personally, I think what's really being tested is our political system.
Observation 1: Voter turn-out is expected to be the highest in recent years.
Observation 2: Our society is more divided than it has been in decades.
Inferrence: Divisiveness has ironically promoted democratic participation. Conversely, our society is less politically divided when people are apathetic. What does that say about democracy? If we want unity in this country, do we need apathy?
Observation 3: Voter fraud.
Inferrence: People believe that for the greater good of the nation, it is perfectly acceptable to circumvent the systems in place. If people are circumventing our very system of democracy, what exactly are we fighting for and trying to protect?
In case you couldn't tell, I'm taking the position of a somewhat removed observer. It's been my opinion lately that democracy is just another fad, and only time will tell whether it works or not. I think this election might give us some idea as to exactly how poorly, or well, our system behaves under adverse conditions. So, happy votin' and I'll see you on the other side.
