How do you know it when you're hearing something that's not real? I just heard a cricket chirp out SOS in morse code. I swear. But how can I prove this? You see, I've always had problems with hearing things. When I did phone support, I used to hear the phone ringing where ever I went (and sometimes, it really was the phone... every phone on campus has the same ring). Our school also has an annoying chime that goes off every half hour that can be heard from all over town...except, I hear it at odd hours. Sometimes I'll be walking down the street and hear my mom call my name...but my mom lives on the other side of the Pacific. Maybe I'm just schizophrenic.
This article on Wired talks about Martin Cooper, the inventor of cell phones. Apparently, he wants to make a cell phone that "fits behind his ear, automatically dials out when he thinks about calling someone". Now that sounds like a bad idea to me... I mean, most people probably think about calling someone far more than they actually do.
"Hello?"
"Uh... hello?"
"Oh hey, it's you. What's up?"
"Um... I, uh... Well, I was thinking about calling you..."
"Really? How nice..."
"...but I really wasn't going to actually call you."
"Oh, that's okay..."
"No, you don't understand... I haven't figured out what to say after calling you. So I'll call you back later."
Yeah, that just wouldn't be pretty. Well, it might be okay for most people, but for socially inept people like myself, it would simply be disastrous.
