I've been hearing about this "blogging" thing a lot recently, so I thought I'd take a look and see what all this hubbub was about. Of course, in my case, that starts with writing my own blogging software and all that. Actually, I've been thinking of writing a blogging software for a while, but well, I finally decided to sit down and do it (hell, it beat doing my Operating Systems or Compiler Design assignment).
Let's see, it's been about 7 hours since I started (well, I've been thinking about the database schema all day) and I've got an interface that supports multiple users, and more flexibility than most alternatives (although probably not as user friendly). As you see, I can write entries (that's the main thing) and you can see them (the other main thing). Obviously, I can fully customize its look and feel as well.
So, what's left? Well, there's still quite a bit left, but hopefully not too much. Here's a quick list:
- Comments
- Editing posts
- Perma-linkable page
- RSS/XML feed?
- Built-in content for side bar (archives, links, etc)
- Referrers
- Probably other stuff that's slipped through my tired mind.
Let's see, what else... Did someone ask if this software's going to be released? Maybe, but not for a while (if at all). I don't mind giving it away, but I've got some "plans" you see. Oh, it's called "IlohaBlog" btw, a sister product of IlohaMail.
Phew. Editing entries works. I had to add it because I found some typos in the last post. Heh...
Okay, so this is a blog right? Right. No blog is complete without excessively personal rambling, so here's a good one to kick things off.
Right. So there's this girl that I'm in love with (isn't there always?). I sit a few (between 3 and 5 usually) feet away from her during class 3 mornings a week, but in keeping with traditional geekdom, haven't had the guts to talk to her (yet). Besides, she had a boyfriend...or at least that was my excuse. Well, today, I found out that she's sort of broken up with her boyfriend and I suddenly found myself without the guts to talk to her or the excuse for not talking to her. I'm a fucking twit...*bangs head against monitor* Argh.
Okay, I'm going to go work on IlohaBlog now (who said anything about coding to compensate for lack of self esteem?).
Woohoo! Implemented comments.
W00T! imail.ecst.csuchico.edu is online! Well, okay, the actual machine's up. I still need to configure IlohaMail...
Nice article on ArsTechnica that talks about MacOS X Finder flaws mostly in how it doesn't allow for spacial orientation. I'd agree that that's one of the main reasons I don't use the Finder nearly as much as I used to under MacOS 7-9. I used to know where the windows would open and where everything would be, allowing me to open folders and files faster (in fact, usually without even looking at the file/folder names).
Reverting the OS X Finder to something more like the Classic Finder would be a welcome change, however, the thing also is 15 years old. I think it's about time that Apple came out with something that was both functional and new.
